The onset of 2020 was a severe blow to the nation when the coronavirus pandemic knocked as a disaster. The economy was hit with a downfall of 23% in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as economic activities were shut down. The entire nation got flabbergasted when they were locked inside their home and recommended to maintain social distance along with regular use of hand sanitizer and masks. With no hope of a solution, India has to wait for a vaccine to get free from the deadly effects of Coronavirus. However, the onset of 2021 brought two indigenous vaccines to fight with coronavirus. They are the Covaxin and Covishield. The vaccination drive started on 16th January 2021 and around 10 lakhs health workers are vaccinated. The drive will continue till India achieves the Covid-free India target.
Why is Republic Day 2021 Special for India?
It is the 72nd Republic Day of India and special as compared to other years. This year, India has conspicuously depicted that it can fight any deadly pandemic coming across its economic development. Some of the highlights that we noticed in the journey from being hit by the pandemic to the efforts of overcoming them.

Salute to the Frontline Health Workers:
When it comes to saving our lives from the deadly effects of the virus, the health workers like doctors, nurses, ward boys, etc were the real hero. They served the patients day and night without heading to their homes for months. Hospitals in the metro cities were stuffed with covid infected patients and the front line health warriors were ready with every possible treatment to make patients feel comfortable, relaxed, along with the ongoing treatment. Every possible arrangement was made to facilitate patients.
India is the First Country With Two Successful Vaccines:
After rigorous research and development, India is the only country out with two vaccines. They are the Covaxin and Covishield approved for medical use. PM Mr. Narendra Modi started the vaccination drive on 16th January. A total of 50-60 countries have ordered the vaccine for their use. Brazil was the first country to get the vaccine consignment from India.
India to Rank Second in Manufacturing PPE Kit:
India witnessed a high consumption of PPE kits as they were only for single use. This raised the demand and the production for the same started at a mass level. India became the second country to be the leader in manufacturing PPE kits.
Indian Railways Extended Help to Nation:
Undoubtedly, Indian railways which are the lifeline of the nation were completely shut to stop the spread of coronavirus. Though railways were shut for the passengers to travel from one place to another, the goods trains were in operation that supplied daily essential needs to every nook and cranny of India. Other initiatives taken by the Indian Railways were:
Distribution of Food packets to the needy by IRCTC in entire India.
Manufacturing hospital beds for corona virus patients.
Converting rail coaches into quarantine centers for patients.
Uninterrupted supply of medicines in entire India.
Manufacturing cheap ventilators for medical practitioners in hospitals.
Helped the e-commerce giants with special goods trains to deliver their products.
Manufacturing of Masks, PPE kits, and sanitizers.
The Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Campaign:
The motive behind launching the Aatm Nirbhar Bharat campaign was to make India self-reliant and encourage self-reliance. The Prime Minister announced a 20 lakh crore package for India under this campaign to help our country out of the coronavirus crisis. The campaign taught us how to be strong and fight the pandemic with courage and patience. As a result, we have two vaccines ready for vaccination drive.
The New Digital India:
We know how work culture in India shifted from offices to home. We have witnessed how schools have shifted to digital learning through online classes. The adoption of digitization in the Indian economy raised the culture of digital learning and conducting businesses digitally. As a result of the pandemic, “digitization” became the definition of modern India.
Republic Day 2021 is Special!
We Indians are proud of our constitutional rights bestowed to us by the freedom fighters. We salute their contribution to making India free from the chain of slavery and made us breathe in the free air with the right to speech, right to education, right to property, right against exploitation, right to freedom of religion, right to equality, etc. India with Aatm Nirbhar Bharat has become self-sufficient, self-sustaining, and self-reliant for every situation. We are an independent republic.
