NIT Surathkal was established in 2002 and was formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC). It is one of the thirty-two National Institute of Technology in India and also recognised as Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The National Highway 66 runs through the campus and it has a close proximity to the Arabian Sea.
