Established in 1959, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is commonly known as IIT Kanpur established by the Government of India. The motto of the institute is in Sanskrit saying Tamaso mā jyotirgamaya which means lead me from darkness to light. The institute started its activities in 1959, in Harcourt Butler Technological Institute.
