National Institute of Meghalaya (NIT Meghalaya) is one of the renowned NITs in India established under the NIT Act 2007. It is a government institute that receives full financial support from the Ministry of HRD, India. In 2010, NIT Meghalaya was started at Surat with Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat as the mentor institute. In November 2011, the institute started operating from a temporary office in Laitumkhrah, Shillong. In July 2012, the institute started its academic activities from its temporary campus in the Bijni Complex, Shillong. The permanent campus of NIT Meghalaya is under development at Cherapunjee. The institute has been ranked 59th in the NIRF rankings of 2021 in the engineering category.

The mission of the institute is to create a centre of excellence to contribute to the world of technology and knowledge. The institute aims to provide quality education to students at UG, PG and doctoral levels. The main objective is to participate in the development of technologies through adequate research programmes. Currently, the institute is offering B.Tech in five specializations, M.Sc. in three streams, M.Tech in five disciplines and Ph.D. programme in various engineering, humanities and science disciplines. There are ten departments in the institute, and each one of them is assigned a Head of Department to ensure the smooth functioning of the work. The institute faculty members are well qualified who have received their training from premium institutions within the country and abroad.
