Established in the year 15th August, 1960, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur was the joint effort of the Government of Bihar and Government of India. The NIT, Jamshedpur offers courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. The institute of 12 departments including humanities, science, and engineering. There are 200 faculty, 4000 students and 150 administrative and supporting staff in the campus. The aim of the institute is to develop students into a like minded human who could cater to the needs of the society and develop or innovate technology to help in the societies progress. It is located on the outskirts of Jamshedpur on 341.3 acres of sprawling, rolling hilly, wooded land. The NIT Jamshedpur institute maintains courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. Apart from this, it also has cricket, hockey and football grounds. The institute is poised for a bright and promising future. As per NIRF rankings 2021, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur has been ranked 86th among engineering institutions while in 2020 the institute was ranked 79th in 2021 in the same category.

At present , the campus of NIT Jamshedpur has a total number of twelve departments that includes courses like- humanities, science and engineering.
