IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is a public university established in 1926. The institution in 1967, was declared deemed to be a university. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad now stands as one of the most noteworthy institutions of the country. There are a total of 18 fully functional branches in the field of Engineering, Management Studies, Applied Sciences, and Humanities. 

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offers various programmes like B.Tech, 5 Years Dual Degree/ Int. M.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc.Tech, Executive MBA, MBA, and PhD programmes. IIT (ISM) is managed by IIT Council-the apex body, Government of India under the Chairmanship of Honorable Minister, MoHRD for uniform and smooth governance of Pan-IIT in our country. With a total of 393 acres of campus (out of which 218 is an existing campus and 175 acres under acquisition and development) IIT (ISM) provides facilities of world-class academic institutes. The university has secured 11th rank in the engineering category in NIRF 2021 ranking. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has been ranked 20th by NIRF in 2021 in the research category. IIT(ISM) Dhanbad has got 26th position in the overall category in NIRF ranking 2021. In addition, the university has secured 30th rank in NIRF management ranking 2020 with a score of 54.54 out of 100. 

The vision of IIT (ISM),Dhanbad is to gain acknowledgment both nationally and internationally as a premier institute for higher technical and scientific education. Considered as a residential campus IIT (ISM),Dhanbad believes in making available a platform for academic independence to its students which helps in the innovation and nurturing of novel ideas amongst the candidates of the institute.
