Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay was established in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay) as the second IIT in all of India with external financial assistance. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is commonly known as IIT Bombay. The then Soviet Union funded IIT in Roubles through UNESCO and it was declared as one of the “Institutes of National Importance” by the Indian Parliament through a decree in 1961.
